Enlightenment challenged the traditional notion that monarchs have the “divine right” to rule over people, deriving their authority from God and therefore could not be held accountable for their actions by any earthly authority and/or legislature. During the 17th century, many Europeans began to question the legitimacy of the English monarchs, advocating for revolution and subsequently the overthrowing of monarchs in search of fostering a society build on individualism as opposed to tradition.
