 Add nine to both sides

18x - 9 = 5 + 12x

     + 9 + 9

Subtract 12x from both sides  

  18x = 14 + 12x

Now that you have x alone on one side divide both sides by 6

    6x = 14

[tex]\frac{6x}{6} = \frac{14}{6}[/tex]

[tex]x = 2 \frac{2}{6} or 2 \frac{1}{3}[/tex]
