A green card, officially known as a Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to migrants as proof that the holder has been given the privilege of living and working permanently in the United States. People with green cards are identified as Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) or green card holders.
