Equation 1)  y=2x+5
Equation 2)  y=3x-1

Rearrange both equations so that the variables are both on the same side of the equal sign.

1) y=2x+5
1) -2x+y=5

2)  y=3x-1
2)  -3x+y=-1

1) -2x+y=5
2) -3x+y=-1

Subtract equations.

x=6

Plug in 6 for x in equation number 1.

y=2x+5

y=2(6) +5

y=12 + 5

y=17
