Why did Columbus write "having trouble with the crew"?

Despite what many people think about Columbus, he was a cruel captain and a  pretty evil man.  He whipped his crew and mistreated them.  One of the sailors found land first but he claimed that he had found land the day before.  His crew was already threatening to rebel against him.
